Avatar Help!

New to Second Life or being a "furry"?

Despite internet rumours and less than favourable media attention, furries are not a group of bad people. Just like every community, there are a few rotten eggs but for the most part we're a bunch of like-minded individuals who have an interest in media featuring animals and a favourite animal of our own (be it real or fantasy). Second Life allows us to bring that part of ourselves to life in a virtual space. In the same way that a football fan supports their favourite team by wearing their colours or merchandise or how someone cosplays their favourite game or anime character, we can choose our look in Second Life to represent the things we love and want to be. We might all be human in real life but Second Life allows us to be whatever we can imagine!

There are many ways to get an avatar and become a Furry in Second Life. If you have a basic look in mind or just want something to start out with, you can buy a complete avatar meant to be worn straight out of the box (minus hair and clothing usually). Complete avatars come in many shapes, sizes, and species offering you a number of choices of what you can be in Second Life.
You can find a wide selection of these in our avatar den at the middle of the region:

Second Life also allows you the freedom to mix and match parts and put together a more unique and personalised look. If you're looking for something a complete avatar doesn't offer or a very specific species/design/etc, there are many "Mod kits" in our Modders Market which allow you to create and modify your avatar using different skins, heads, bodies, and other parts from various creators.
You can find our Modders Market at the following SLURL:

As one of the biggest furry communities in Second Life, we try to support Original Content Creators as much as possible and offer free spots to Avatar and Mod Creators (Please contact a Mall Manager if this applies to you)

Having a furry avatar might make you think that you're restricted in the clothing that you can wear in Second Life since you're not human. The truth is that this depends wholly on the type of furry avatar and mods you choose to create the look you want. If you prefer digigrade legs and feet compared to human ones, you might have some issues with things like pants, socks, and shoes. There are also some complete avatars, such as Thicc Fox and Snokra, that can only wear clothing made specifically for them. For the most part though, we can wear 90% of clothing made for human avatars. Many furry mods use the same bodies that human avatars do (Maitreya, Belleza Jake, Slink etc) and the new Regalia body, while made specifically for furries, will fit almost all human mesh body clothing without any issues.

Most hair made for human avatars will fit straight out of the box or with a bit of tinkering. Rigged hair can't be resized but some include sizing options, styling options, or are modify allowing you to move or change any parts that clip. Many newer furry heads are made around the same size as a human head and respond to the head size sliders which helps to get hair to fit properly.

Remember - if you can DEMO then always, always DEMO before you buy clothing or hair.

Omega is a applier that uses the SL Default skin/body layout and if your mesh body is compatible , your omega items will work with it (every item needs the omega relay hud) For example if I buy a omega mod and want to use it on my *maitreya* mesh body I'd need to get the Omega Maitreya Relay hud and wear that while trying to apply the mod.
